From Friday 28 April to Sunday 7 May, Urban Kitchen will pop up at the Gawler Place Canopy with a program to showcase how some of the best South Australian artisan produce can be paired with favourite beverages in daily cooking demonstrations presented by Sprout Cooking School.

Masterclasses with trailblazing winemaker Chester Osborn, truffle and honeycomb making with a Belgian chocolatier and tastings from South Australian brewers, distillers and wineries are just some of the highlights of this month’s Urban Kitchen program, to be held in Rundle Mall for Tasting Australia.

Producers to be showcased across the 10-day Urban Kitchen include Two Gulfs Crab, Red Hen Spirits, Rohde’s Free Range Eggs, Howard Vineyard, Barossa Fine Foods, d’Arenberg, Charlesworth Nuts, Pirate Life Brewing, Harvest The Fleurieu, and Eldredge Vineyards.

Andrew White, the Adelaide Economic Development Agency’s Executive Manager, Rundle Mall, says the masterclasses with Chester and Remco add a new dimension to the popular Urban Kitchen event.

“Keen foodies booked out last year’s cooking demonstrations within days, so we’ve expanded this year’s program to celebrate more producers, artisans and iconic brands and connect visitors for Tasting Australia with Rundle Mall,” said White.

“We’re thrilled to have the calibre of Chester and Remco share their love for all things wine and chocolate to create some exclusive and immersive experiences for visitors to enjoy in the heart of Rundle Mall.

Urban Kitchen is a great opportunity for visitors to have a day out in the city to learn some new recipes, shop for some new cookbooks or homewares and enjoy one of more than 100 eateries, cafés and restaurants in Rundle Mall, from Remy’s to Hawker Walker, Fishbank and 2KW.

Tickets for demonstrations and the Koko Black masterclasses are $10 each, and $30 for the d’Arenberg masterclass

Koko Black Head Chocolatier & Product Innovator, Remco Brigou, will demonstrate how to make decadent Belgian truffles and for the first time, share tips and tricks on creating the perfect leatherwood honeycomb in two masterclasses. Participants will have the opportunity to sample the creations from each class.

Wine connoisseurs will also be able to take advantage of an exclusive opportunity to taste eight unique wine varieties personally chosen by d’Arenberg’s chief winemaker Chester Osborn in a rare class planned for Saturday 6 May.

During Sprout’s 45-minute live cooking demonstrations held three to four times daily, eager home cooks will learn how to pair delicious local produce with some of South Australia’s finest wine, gin and craft beer.

For Chester and Remco, the masterclasses are a great opportunity to meet customers and share their passions outside of the winery and test kitchen. “Creating rich, smooth and creamy Belgian truffles is an art form that takes time, skill and knowledge to perfect,” Remco said.

“I’m looking forward to hosting Koko Black’s masterclasses in Adelaide and meeting our loyal customers who have supported us so well since we opened in Rundle Mall several years ago.”

Participants receive samples of the day’s dishes paired with the accompanying wine, beer or gin, and a Rundle Mall goodie bag

Chester is keen to bring the wine-tasting experience to the premier shopping precinct. His family have been growing grapes and making wine using traditional methods for four generations in picturesque McLaren Vale to create some of the region’s most coveted drops.

“I love explaining the story behind each wine, the trailblazers range represents newer and less common varieties we have been trialling over a number of years, a project that is close to my heart,” he said.

All participants will receive samples of the day’s dishes paired with the accompanying wine, beer or gin, and a Rundle Mall goodie bag filled with exclusive gifts and recipe cards so they can recreate the dishes at home.
