Darling Square kicks off its Lunar New Year celebrations today with a series of cultural performances, live entertainment, and art installations, as well as festive food and beverages from retailers across the precinct.
Anchored in the centre of the precinct, visitors will be immersed in a sea of lights with hundreds of traditional New Year lanterns. Adding to the cultural experience, Sydney-based artist Chris Lee has created murals of the 12 animals of the Zodiac, interpreted through the modern lens of Asian graphic novels.
The program also includes traditional lion dancing, with performances taking place on the 21st and 22nd of January as well as the 3rd, 4th, and 5th of February. Each Friday from 5-9pm there will be DJs in the square bringing tunes to ring in the New Year.
Food retailers across the precinct have joined in the celebrations, creating special Lunar New Year-themed menu items.
Back by popular demand, Gong Grocer will be popping up from Thursday 19 to Sunday 29 January with a Lunar New Year gift shop and snack bar. Located just outside Maker’s Dozen, Gong Grocer will have festive and trendy hongbaos (red pockets), bespoke gift hampers, traditional street food snacks and exclusive Darling Square Quarter X Gong Grocer cookie packs available for purchase.
The pop-up will spread the Lunar New Year joy with its interactive wishing well tree, featuring traditional Hongbao ornaments filled with instant lucky prizes, vouchers, and fortunes to pluck from.
Darling Square is part of the Darling Harbour precinct, which continues the Lunar New Year celebrations. After immersing in art, entertainment, and food, visitors can stroll down to the foreshore to see dragon boat races, jet-pack water shows and fireworks each weekend from 21 January to 5 February.
