AMP Capital managed Bayfair Shopping Centre has continued its long-standing relationship with the local community by running its annual School Rewards Campaign, and awarding three local schools a total of $10,000 to help fund special items to ensure students have access to the latest in technology and educational experience.

Last month, every $50 spent at the centre between 12 and 26 September equalled one token. Shoppers had the choice of placing their tokens with any one of the eight participating schools. The total number of tokens for each school was counted at the end of the campaign and divided by the number of pupils at each school to establish a participation percentage. This meant the first prize was fair game for all, regardless of school enrolment sizes.

St Thomas More Catholic School celebrates their win

Local St Thomas More Catholic School teaches its kids the importance of sustainability by boosting its From Garden to Table initiative. After placing first in Bayfair Shopping Centre’s School Rewards competition, St Thomas More has received $5,000 to help grow the initiative.

Principal Kath Joblin says, “We are so excited to have won the Bayfair School Rewards this year. Last year we came second, and we used the prize money to contact people to help us start our gardening projects in 2019. Thanks to People in Parks (PIPS) we have had the help of Leo the worm farmer and Jake the permaculture guru to guide the teachers and students in their learning. The cost of the program was covered by the Bayfair School Rewards 2018 prize of $3,000.

“This year our middle school students (Years 3 and 4)  have been fully involved in worm farming and learning about sustainability. We have called it From Garden to Table. Activities have included changing our classrooms into a café which served parents and community members soup and cakes using the produce from our gardens. We are a very small school next to Baywave/Bayfair, with only 190 children. The reason we won was because of our supportive parents, friends and parishioners and we’d love to thank them for their efforts”, she continued.

Second place winners were Te Kura o Matapihi, taking away $3,000 who will use the money to go towards new sports equipment for playtime and lunchtime. Omanu Primary School placed third, receiving $2,000 which will go towards new sunshades.
