In the dynamic realm of retail property, women are increasingly making their mark, reshaping landscapes and redefining industry standards. In this special SCN feature, we invited nine trailblazing women who are at the forefront of the property industry. From leasing to funds management, customer and asset management, these leaders exemplify resilience, creativity and expertise in their respective domains. Their journeys and experiences not only inspire but also challenge traditional narratives, paving the way for future generations…

Amanda Steele is ISPT’s Group Executive, Head of Property and is a driven commercial leader with a strong track record in profit growth, transformational change and addressing business problems for investor benefit. Prior to joining ISPT, Amanda held the position of Executive Managing Director of Property Management at CBRE, was awarded the 2019 NSW Telstra Business Women’s Award and continues to regularly host the property series, The Placemakers. At ISPT, Amanda leads the development and implementation of enhanced asset strategies across ISPT’s properties including Office, Retail, Industrial, Healthcare and Life Sciences, delivering strong, sustainable returns for investors.

Outline your current role and responsibilities…

As Group Executive, Head of Property, I am responsible for leasing and management of all 125 of ISPT’s wholly owned properties across all sectors. In addition, I drive the Property Experience approach, which uniquely positions ISPT to our tenant partners as well as our Strategic Research team, who provide the whole-of-business with the data and insights needed to make fast and informed decisions.

Tell us about your career path and how you got started in retail property?

Gosh, where did I start?

Was it my retail career at The Body Shop in the Brisbane Wintergarden – a centre ISPT owns and that we are redeveloping as part of the 150 Elizabeth Precinct? Or was it my studies in Public Policy with a focus on ESG that got me here? Ultimately I have worked across all sectors – government, not for profit and corporate – and from each I have gained valuable lessons on how to manage complex systems. My career in direct Property started at Stockland in ESG and I loved the sector so much I didn’t want to leave!

Then followed eight rewarding years at CBRE and five roles, including growing the property management business to the dominant player in the Australia and New Zealand market. The role I am in at ISPT now is a dream position – amazing leadership, a transformation agenda, a purpose-driven culture and quality assets that I have admired for many years.

What were your biggest challenges along the way?

I don’t think there are many parents that wouldn’t cite the challenges of growing your career and managing family as a challenge. It’s a juggle!

Other challenges have been trying to move my career into different roles and being pigeon-holed into my previous roles. CBRE were amazing in letting me explore new roles and develop new skills.

Tell us about someone who has inspired you?

I’ve been very lucky with my bosses. Anita Roddick was closely involved in our store at The Body Shop – she taught me it was okay to be profit-driven and still focus on purpose. I also had the total joy of working with the incoming Governor General! Sam Mostyn was a key influencer in my career and her good grace and excellent wit are imprinted on my professional approach.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Well my mother told me never to date a man in all white unless he was playing tennis or cricket. It was pretty sound!

Best career advice remains say ‘yes’ and then figure it out.

What are your top tips for the next generation of female leaders?

Make sure your voice is heard in the room, bring solutions not problems, never apologise for your commitments outside of work.

Karingal Hub, VIC

What motivates you to keep going?

I love my job! There’s not one day I don’t get out of bed with excitement about what’s ahead. There are many challenges and it can be really, really hard, but I have an amazing team, I have a great network of supporters and I have a family that are proud of what I deliver and how I do it.

How do you manage self-doubt?

Some days are easier than others. I seek counsel from my network, I ensure I have downtime (often swimming or the gym) and I’ll text my best friend Melissa, who will set me straight every time (usually with language that could not be shared in mixed company).

Most memorable career moment?

Receiving the Telstra NSW Business Woman of the year.

Proudest moment?

I’m not sure there’s one and I always think pride is a result of a team effort. I’m very proud of the teams I’ve created, they are some of the best in the business.

What excites you about the future?

The increased focus on inclusivity and incorporating ESG into everything we do in property.

What do you want to achieve next?

I want ISPT to be recognised globally as the most progressive and aspirational property group imaginable. Oh, and I want to complete more hikes in Tasmania.
