Perth’s Ellenbrook Central celebrated the launch of its $63 million expansion with the ‘turning of the first sod’ to officially kick off the project. Centre Manager Roisin McDonagh and Development Manager Jamie Nancarrow broke first ground together with Jessica Shaw MLA, State Member for Swan Hills and City of Swan Mayor, David Lucas.

Ellenbrook Central’s 11,000m2 expansion includes a brand-new Kmart and an additional 20 retailers set to open in 2020. On completion, Ellenbrook Central will offer local customers more choice with more than 120 retailers and brands including Kmart, ALDI, Coles, Woolworths, Big W and Best & Less in one convenient location.

McDonagh said: “Celebrating the start of construction is a pivotal milestone for our local community and for our customers who are looking forward to Ellenbrook Central offering more choice and convenience close to home.”

Another element to the expansion is making Ellenbrook Central even more sustainable with more than 320 new rooftop car parks topped with solar generating shades. This builds on Ellenbrook’s rooftop solar system and award-winning solar powered bench which collect and store energy from the sun and transfers it to mobile phones and tablets, which was an Australian first for a shopping centre.

“The community benefits of our expansion are wide ranging and significant as we are generating 500 jobs including 120 jobs through construction and 380 new ongoing retail, hospitality and services jobs for the local economy,” Nancarrow added.

For 15 years Ellenbrook Central has been at the heart of the local community and this expansion is an exciting new chapter in this growth corridor.

“The expanded Ellenbrook Central is poised to take advantage of the region’s growing population which is forecast to grow by 3.5% each year, for the next decade,”  Nancarrow concluded.
