Lendlease’s Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City has unveiled a mural in its Changing Places facility by artist, Monica McGhie, who uses her mouth to paint. The adult changing facility enables people with severe and profound disabilities and their carers to go to the bathroom with dignity.
Lakeside Joondalup’s Changing Places facility opened in January this year, and is the first of its kind in a Western Australia shopping centre. The adult changing facility is fully accessible and fitted with a change table and hoist. Lendlease is on schedule to roll out these adult changing facilities across its portfolio.
Gemma Hannigan, Centre Manager for Lakeside Joondalup said that since it opened, the facility has enabled many people with disabilities, their carers and families to comfortably plan and enjoy a visit to the centre.
“For people with severe disabilities, not having access to a facility like ours, isolates them and their carers in their homes. We’re working to make Lakeside Joondalup the destination of choice for people with a disability.”, she said
“We engaged Monica McGhie to create an artwork that would add colour and vibrancy to the facility and bring joy to its users. As a frequent visitor to Lakeside Joondalup and a local artist, we knew Ms McGhie was perfect for the job,” Hannigan said.
Monica McGhie, despite having no arms and legs, is an accomplished mouth painting artist, and advocate for people with disabilities.
