Minister for Planning Richard Wynne has given the stamp of approval for the masterplan of Westfield Doncaster. The Andrews Labor Government is ensuring Melbourne remains Australia’s capital for fashion, food and retail with the approval of the masterplan for a $500 million redevelopment at Westfield Doncaster. The project will create about 2,000 jobs in construction and 2,900 new full and part-time jobs at Westfield Doncaster after completion.
A key feature will be a gateway building of up to 14 storeys, positioned above a two-level podium of new premium retail in the north-west sector of the site. This will provide an additional 43,000m2 of retail and 18,000m2 of commercial office space. The upgrade will include an expanded bus interchange, improved car and pedestrian access within the centre and additional car parking.
“Melbourne is already the nation’s retail capital and this major expansion will cement its reputation for the years to come. This project will create thousands of jobs, draw thousands of shoppers from across the world, and will be a major boost to Victoria’s economy” said Wynne.
Feedback from the community on the proposed development plans was taken on board, following the public viewing of development plans in December and January this year. The approval paves the way for the owners to lodge a Planning Permit with the Manningham City Council and ensures the community’s needs are included in the development.
“The approved masterplan supports our long-term vision for the future growth and expansion of Westfield Doncaster as one of Melbourne’s premier destinations. This will be an exciting next chapter for the centre which will mark its 50th year of operation soon. The masterplan will allow us to realise the full potential of the site and our aspirations to cement Westfield Doncaster as a true living centre catering to the growing Doncaster Hill community and surrounds.
We are looking forward to providing additional details when we lodge our planning permit for the first stage of the redevelopment, which – in line with local customer and community feedback – will be focused on increasing high-end specialty fashion, dining and entertainment, as well as our health and wellness offering” said Scentre Group Director Development and Asset Management, Stewart White.
The retail industry is one of Victoria’s most important employers, providing over 300,000 jobs across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Figures released earlier in January by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed that Victorians spent a record $78.9 billion on retail sales over the last year.
Member for Eastern Metropolitan Shaun Leane stated, “The expansion to Westfield Doncaster will create thousands of local jobs and make this shopping district even better. We’ve listened to community feedback on this development and now we’re making sure it gets underway.”
