Mirvac’s Kawana Shoppingworld has celebrated the centre’s 40th birthday by treating customers to an epic weekend with free cake, popcorn, coastal inspired cocktails, face painting, balloons, live music and a 40th anniversary Kawana Shoppingworld tote bag, plus exclusive retailer offers, prizes and events.
Kawana Shoppingworld is a sub-regional shopping centre located in the suburb of Buddina on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Centre Manager, Robert Smith was excited to kick off the celebrations for the 40th birthday with a speech and the first cut of the cake to share with the community.
“Kawana Shoppingworld is officially 40 and what better way to celebrate than with a giant cake that can feed the masses. We want to thank our loyal shoppers for joining us this weekend and we hope they had as much fun as we did.”
“Kawana Shoppingworld has always been an important part of the community, and when it opened its doors in 1979, as the Sunshine Coast’s first shopping centre, it provided a significant shopping destination for both residents and visitors,” said Smith.
Originally launched as ‘Kern Shopping Town’, the centre was opened by the then Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen and the guests attending were thrilled by a money drop of one-dollar shopping centre currency from a helicopter.
The centre launched with more than 40 retailers including Woolworths and Big W as anchor tenants. Out of the original retailers, Terry White Pharmacy, Rockmans, Commonwealth Bank, Wallace Bishop, Red Apple, Kawana Newsagency, Katies and Mister Minit still remain as current retailers.
Kawana Shoppingworld was profiled in SCN a year ago and has grown to boast more than 160 stores including a new casual dining and entertainment precinct, which is home to the Event Cinemas, including the first Gold Class and Vmax experiences on the Sunshine Coast that opened in 2018.
The centre celebrated its birthday on Saturday 26 October and Sunday 27 October, and although it was Kawana Shoppingworld’s birthday, the gifts were for the shoppers and they certainly did not stop there. Customers were treated to a free self-serve candy bar, free beach umbrellas for the summer ahead and took full advantage of the Faces of Kawana photo opportunity in-centre for their chance to win a $100 Gift Card.
The centre also held a ball pit prize dive to give the Sunshine Coast community the chance to win as many prizes as they could grab – gold class tickets, dining gift cards, gelato, candles, retailer gift cards and more.
