Containers are at the heart of Queensland’s new food and social precinct – BITE Markets, a new street food and entertainment hub north of Brisbane made out of 66 modified shipping containers. The markets are designed to showcase everything from local food and wine through to artistic talent. 

BITE Markets at North Harbour opened this month and is home to more than 40 of south east Queensland’s best artisan producers, local eateries, and creatives. 

Located 40 kilometres from Brisbane, the boulevard of colourful customised shipping containers allow the region’s ‘Flavour Makers’ to transform the spaces inside the steel boxes and make them their own. 

Food and creativity comes together

Royal Wolf, Australasia’s largest supplier of shipping containers, worked with BITE Markets on the technical, design and planning aspects of the development. The concept is similar to Brisbane’s container food and dining hub, Eat Street, which Royal Wolf also supplied containers and design expertise for. 

BITE founder Tom Burke says his vision for BITE was to create a place for people to gather, eat, drink, and spend time with friends and family while enjoying the delicious produce and stunning lifestyle offered by the Moreton region. 

“Containers were a fantastic solution for BITE because they allowed us to turn that vision into a reality in a very efficient and seamless way. The containers also provide our Flavour Makers with venues to operate out of without being delayed by building infrastructure while delivering an industrial chic aesthetic that brightens the centre.” Burke said 

“We are proud of the space we have created. The Queensland food scene has been underrepresented in North Brisbane and we are excited to give it the recognition it deserves while creating a space for the community to enjoy for years to come.” he continued 

Containers create a great atmosphere

CEO Neil Littlewood, of Royal Wolf, says the street food market is a great example of how diverse and adaptable shipping containers can be. 

“They bring a stylish, industrial chic aesthetic to the development while also being highly functional, durable, and practical. For a project like BITE, containers are perfect because it means they can be adapted and fitted out to suit a Flavour Maker’s individual needs – be it for a café, a retail outlet, or an entertainment-meets-community space,” he says. 

“Just like Brisbane’s Eat Street, which has been hugely successful, BITE will be a real asset to the people of North Brisbane and make this fast-growing destination even more vibrant.” 

BITE opens every Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 10pm and has $3 entry for adults, children 12 year and under are free of charge.
