A development application for refurbishment works at Sunnybank Plaza has been lodged with the Brisbane City Council. The centre, owned by YFG Shopping Centres and managed by Retail First is anchored by strong performing major retailers; Kmart, Coles Supermarket and HOYTS Cinemas, alongside a vibrant international dining precinct and more than 130 specialty stores.
Retail First has confirmed that the proposed architectural design, prepared by award-winning architects The Buchan Group, includes façade and key entry statement upgrade work, enhancing the shopping centre streetscape and creating a high-quality user experience through the redefined laneway dining precent adjacent to Canna Street. Extensive internal mall, foodcourt and amenity upgrades completes this phase of proposed works.
Construction work at Sunnybank Plaza, which has been a bustling shopping and dining precinct since opening in 1975, is proposed to commence in early 2020 with completion anticipated for late 2020 / early 2021, subject to the development application process.
Centre Manager, Nick Ives said that Sunnybank Plaza has evolved over time within the dynamics of a strong multicultural trade area, sitting in the heart of what is fondly referred to as Brisbane’s Little Asia.
“Our planning is designed to improve the shopping and dining experience and meet the needs of the customers. We want to strengthen our position as being central to the local and broader community, whilst maintaining the multi-cultural authenticity and unique appeal that Sunnybank Plaza has long established.”
“The upcoming Centre changes will deliver a contemporary upgrade that connects and resonates with our existing and emerging customer needs and expectations. This will be key in making this project a success,” Ives said.
Ives stated that, pending approvals, Sunnybank Plaza will remain open during the construction and refurbishment and all efforts will be made to ensure disruption to shoppers and retailers is kept to a minimum. Further updates will become available on the Sunnybank Plaza website and Facebook page, once approvals proceed.
