Tauranga’s growth trajectory is set to continue as Bayfair Shopping Centre prepares to embark on a dramatic transformation. The centre is planning to undertake a staged development programme, which will add approximately 50 specialty stores including a strong fashion mix new to the region, an alfresco dining precinct, brand new Countdown supermarket, and the Bay of Plenty’s largest cinema complex with seven screens.
The centre’s overall footprint is expected to expand by 9,000 square metres (sqm) to a total of 42,000 sqm, which will house 150 stores and 1,820 carparks. It is anticipated the development will commence in the coming months.
Steve Ellingford, the centre manager at Bayfair Shopping Centre, says the centre and development teams are excited to get started on a large-scale programme that has been in the works for some time.
Ellingford said: “This is a purpose-driven development that will provide greater choice for people in the region, attract to the Bay of Plenty the types of retailers we typically see in the big cities, and create new job opportunities.
“Tauranga is booming and Bayfair is growing alongside the city. We are a retail, sustainability and community leader, and will continue to enhance our offering for the benefit of the city and region. This development will provide our customers with new and exciting retail, lifestyle, hospitality and entertainment choices.”
Bayfair Shopping Centre, managed by AMP Capital, is earmarking around $100 million for the planned development, which will enhance its 30-year status as one of the most popular shopping centres in the Bay of Plenty. The centre is home to some of Australasia’s well-known fashion brands, a 440-seat food court, Kmart, Farmers department store, Countdown supermarket and a full range of everyday conveniences and services.
During the past several years, Bayfair has distinguished itself as one of New Zealand’s most progressive retail enterprises, boasting a range of firsts among shopping centres in the areas of sustainability, accessibility and inclusiveness – all of which will be at the forefront of its expansion.
The centre was the first New Zealand business to be rated platinum for accessibility, and it offers free parking, electrical vehicle charging stations, and bicycle and mobility scooter stations at its doorstep.
Ellingford says the Bayfair redevelopment aligns with AMP Capital’s vision to create and maintain exceptional destination shopping centres. He said: “This is a competitive market in a high-growth area with increasingly sophisticated, connected consumers who want access to the same experiences, brands and lifestyle services they have enjoyed in other cities and countries.
“Our plan is to create opportunities for retail businesses that will in turn boost the regional economy and bring all the leading retail trends to Tauranga. We have always punched above our weight in sales against other shopping centres, and this proposed investment is an indication of the region’s prosperity and Bayfair’s contribution to the commerce of Tauranga.”
Throughout the planned development, Bayfair will host a number of community-focused events, including the annual inclusive events for which the centre has become known, and other new initiatives, which will give residents the chance to connect with various local charities and organisations.
