Standing proudly within Sydney’s inner west for more than 150 years, the much-loved and iconic original Grace Brothers façade of Broadway Sydney is getting a makeover.

Mirvac has started heritage restoration works that will help retain Broadway Sydney’s iconic history, and develop rebel’s new flagship store, the ‘House of Sport’.

Mirvac’s Centre Manager for Broadway Sydney, Justine Saunders said maintaining Broadway’s history as the ‘House of the People Store’ will be a significant consideration throughout the entirety of the renovation works.

“Through investing time and resources into the renovation, we hope to embrace the past, while enhancing the centre’s shopping experience for current and future customers,” said Saunders.

This new and improved rebel store will span across three levels, making it Sydney’s newest large format store that showcases an extended range of products across high-involvement sports.

Ryan Pittaway, GM Portfolio Strategy for rebel, explains how customers of this new rebel store will also be able to enjoy a fresh and exciting in-store experience, with the interactive experience zones throughout the store.

“We are delighted to be opening rebel Sport’s new flagship store at Broadway, offering sports lovers of all ages an immersive, accessible and entertaining in-store shopping experience,” said Pittaway.

“The three-level flagship store will integrate rebel’s unique rCX design and feature rebel’s largest assortment of sports and lifestyle products for customers in the area, including an indoor basketball experience, kids gaming and a Home of Football basement.

“We look forward to opening our doors to active families, sports fans, outdoor enthusiasts and athletes in mid 2025,” he said.

The original Grace Brothers façade of Broadway is symbolic of Sydney’s growth as a city, and the iconic glass and steel globe standing on top of the five stories had a significant impact on Sydney’s landscape when it was first built.

“Broadway Sydney looked rather different back in 1904 when the original five-storey Grace Brothers department store opened. If the walls of this shopping centre could talk, the stories they could tell,” said Saunders.

“The commencement of these works has created great excitement across our team. As we produce new ways to grow the centre, we also find new ways to maintain the history of the building.”

The development and construction teams working on this project expect disruption to the wider community to be minimal and the public will be kept informed as works progress.
