Wing, Australia’s first on-demand drone delivery service will launch in Victoria today, taking flight in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
The introduction of drone delivery in the Maroondah City Council area and surrounding suburbs will provide a faster, more efficient and environmentally friendly last-mile delivery option.
Flying from QIC’s Eastland Shopping Centre in Ringwood, Victoria, Wing in partnership with DoorDash and QIC will help extend the reach of participating stores, supporting local businesses and increasing accessibility to people in 26 suburbs including Ringwood, Ringwood North, Mitcham, Nunawading, Donvale, Park Orchards, Warranwood, Croydon Hills, Croydon South, Bayswater, Wantirna, Heathmont, Vermont, and in parts of Vermont South, Forest Hill, Wonga Park, Kilsyth, Warrandyte South, Blackburn, Blackburn North, Doncaster East, Croydon North, Croydon, Bayswater North, Boronia and Wantirna South.
“We’re thrilled to kick off delivery in a new state and city, delivering to the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Our first Nest in Victoria will be located at QIC’s Eastland Shopping Centre in Maroondah, and cover an area which will give over 250,000 residents access to drone delivery via the DoorDash app,” said Wing spokesperson Jesse Suskin.
“Four years ago, we started Australia’s first urban drone delivery service in Southeast Queensland, integrating our delivery drones at major shopping centres in densely populated areas, located alongside the merchants we deliver for.”
“Our customers use drone delivery, for things like a loaf of bread to prepare school lunch, toiletries, or an afternoon treat like coffee or ice cream. We’ve been able to provide delivery that’s safe, fast, and environmentally friendly.”
The initiative also emphasises Eastland’s focus on supporting retailer growth and consumer experience, while ensuring the centre is future ready by embracing emerging technologies and services. While for DoorDash it creates a quick, efficient option for smaller orders and frees up their teams to focus on larger deliveries.
Eastland General Manager, Greg Balmforth, said, “By bringing drone delivery to Eastland in Ringwood, we can help retailers harness another avenue of business while improving the shopping experience for our customers.”
Puji Fernando, General Manager of DoorDash Australia, said, “DoorDash is committed to providing the best delivery options to our customers. Drone delivery is an excellent complement to our ground delivery services. We are excited for this service expansion into Melbourne in conjunction with Wing to bring innovative delivery solutions to more Australians and support more local businesses.”
Residents of the listed suburbs can access the service by clicking the ‘drone’ icon on the DoorDash app to order from retailers who’ve opted in to Wing’s service from Eastland Shopping Centre, including Gelatissimo, Schnitz, Sushi Hub, and over 20 other retailers.
