Following more than 12 months of construction, Marketplace Gungahlin has announced the opening of its new and highly anticipated retail precinct on level one, above the Kmart mall, on Thursday, 17 August 2023.

The expansion of Marketplace coincides with the centre’s 25th anniversary of service to the Gungahlin, Canberra community.

The $60 million expansion, titled ‘Level Up,’ brings an array of new retailers to Marketplace, comprising an ALDI Supermarket, the largest Chemist Warehouse in Canberra, a 1,000m2 Daily Market Asian supermarket, a 700m2 Desi Bazaar Indian supermarket and an impressive range of speciality retailers including Espresso Room, Chatkazz Authentic Indian Cuisine, Bed Bath N’ Table, Miniso, Sushi Hub and more.

The development will add an extra 6,500m2 of retail as well as a pedestrian Skywalk Bridge providing all weather protection over Hibberson Street, connecting Marketplace’s North and South Malls.

Jeremy Wilson, Centre Manager of Marketplace Gungahlin said, “We are so pleased to reveal the grand opening date of August 17 for our Level Up development.”

“We’re taking Marketplace Gungahlin to the next level and enhancing our range of stores to cater to the rapid growth in the area. Our aim is to provide added convenience and an improved shopping experience for the community.

“Excitingly, in addition to the popular ‘MarketPlay’ children’s playground in the BIG W Mall, Level Up will incorporate a brand-new indoor children’s playground experience, ‘MarketQuest’. It features a five-metre-high jungle gym style play equipment, inspired by our region’s iconic bogong moth, and celebrating its journey as it migrates from Queensland to the Snowy Mountains each year.

“This year we commemorate a monumental milestone for Marketplace,” said Wilson.

“For 25 years, we have been a pillar in the local community, providing more than just a shopping destination. Marketplace is a space for neighbours to connect, families to bond, and memories to flourish.”

“As we embark on a new era with Level Up, we’re more dedicated than ever to serving as your trusted community hub.”

Once Level Up opens, Marketplace will offer two supermarkets (Woolworths and ALDI), two discount department stores (Kmart and Big W), two mini majors, more than 120 retail, dining, and services stores, two children’s indoor playgrounds, a new parents room and over 1,300 car park spaces.

In line with the ACT’s commitment to sustainability, the centre owners have also invested heavily in renewable energy, significantly increasing its previous output, and are now able to generate up to 1,000 kilowatts of power daily.

Marketplace will be celebrating the opening of Level Up with a grand opening ceremony on Thursday August 17, alongside an entire weekend of exciting activations, performances, and exclusive deals.
