Lakelands Shopping Centre and SecondBite have partnered to rescue food from the centre’s retailers and distribute it to the less fortunate in the Lakelands community. SecondBite already collects and redistributes food from Coles supermarkets all around the country and the Lakelands Centre Management team wanted to extend the program to the rest of the centre.
Lakelands is a community space at the heart of the exciting Lakelands development, 60km south of Perth. Owned by ISPT, Lakelands offers an array of retailers from everyday groceries and produce, eateries to specialty retail, outdoor spaces and services.
“We are delighted to give our retailers the opportunity to be part of such a great initiative. It’s a no-brainer for us to support the local community and minimise wastage for the centre. The long-term environmental benefit from this program is unquantifiable and we are grateful for organisations such as SecondBite and Feed it Forward to be there and working with us on this initiative,” said Amanda Clarke, Centre Manager for Lakelands Shopping Centre.
A fridge was purchased by Lakelands Centre Management team and placed in a secured location within the centre for retailers to donate unsold food.
SecondBite on the ground’s partner, Feed it Forward Maori Stylz WA, organised for their volunteers to collect donated food from Lakelands Shopping Centre daily.
This initiative started in another shopping centre in WA last year and has seen more than 4,000 kgs of food rescued to date.
