An international fitness giant is set to open in Corio Village this year, the first of 30 clubs it plans to open in a major push to shake up the Victorian fitness industry.
Planet Fitness Chief Operations Officer Danielle Monroy said the move into Corio Village was a strategic move as part of their focus on regional markets.
“This was a huge opportunity to get into a centre that has all of your daily shopping needs but is also strategically incorporating lifestyle opportunities in addition to traditional retail,” Monroy said.
“Everything we do is planned around making someone with no previous experience feel welcome and comfortable. We cater to the first-time gym user and it’s designed to make it fun.”
Centre owners, IP Generation, have welcomed the arrival of Planet Fitness as part of the centre’s strategic plan to expand beyond traditional retail with new lifestyle, wellness and entertainment offerings.
“The team has put a lot of work in over the past few years to change the face of the centre. We are excited to welcome a great wellness and lifestyle brand in Planet Fitness. They will complement the current tenancy mix, including family entertainment and hospitality venue, General Public, that is currently under construction and set to open mid-2023,” Adam Davis Head of Property for IP Generation said.
Planet Fitness prides itself on providing a high-quality experience at an exceptional value and being a ‘Judgement Free Zone’, where members experience a non-intimidating environment, world class facilities with $5 per week memberships.
Monroy has some bold ambitions to grow the Australian fitness market at pace, similar to the growth the US fitness industry has seen in the last ten to 15 years.
“Only 12-15% of Australians have a gym membership today. By focusing on the 75%-80% of people who are not engaged today with fitness, we aim to grow the industry to 20% by 2030. We intend to do that by offering a world class experience at an affordable rate.”
In addition to accessible, affordable membership opportunities, Planet Fitness offer a range of other wellness services and amenities like hydro massage, total body enhancement, and spray tanning through its Black Card Spa membership.
General Public Marketing Executive Jennifer Boulos said works are progressing well on site and their warehouse was filling with arcade games from overseas to be ready for installation.
“General Public will be a great fit for the centre and the precinct. Right from the start we have designed it to be a place for families to enjoy something for all ages under one stylish roof,” Boulos said.
Parents can come and relax with young children right through to teenagers and enjoy great food, and beverages and world class entertainment in what we call an ‘EATERTAINERY.”
Plans for the 2,095m2 basement space at the shopping centre includes 11 bowling lanes, arcade games, pool tables, a bar serving craft beers and cocktails and multiple function rooms.
