Barangaroo takes top shopping centre development award

Three world-leading approaches to retail have taken home prestigious prizes at the 2019 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards. Lendlease was presented with the Hiflow Award for Best Shopping Centre Development for The Streets of Barangaroo in Sydney. With 83 retail stores and a GLA of more than 16,500m2, The Streets of Barangaroo boasts the city’s highest concentration of food and beverage outlets.

According to the Property Council’s Chief Executive, Ken Morrison, The Streets of Barangaroo has become a case study for retail activation around the globe. “Lendlease invited future office workers, residents and Sydneysiders to be part of the co-curation process to ensure the retail offering at Barangaroo exceeded all expectations. The result is a unique village-like atmosphere in the heart of Sydney’s CBD”.

The first retail stores opened their doors in July 2015, with additional outlets progressively come online with each new building. The final retail venue opened in December 2017. “Lendlease set a bold ambition to deliver Australia’s first carbon neutral precinct, working closely with its tenants to ensure each received Green Star certification. The significance of this achievement cannot be understated and the precinct-wide approach is a global first in the retail industry,” Morrison adds.

Barangaroo – an award winning development Lendlease won Lendlease scooped up a total of five awards including: 

  • RLB Development of the Year Award for International House Sydney 
  • Woods Bagot Award for Best Public Building for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital 
  • Hickory Building Award for Best Tourism and Leisure Development for the Adelaide Convention Centre Redevelopment 
  • SAS International Award for Best Office Development for International House Sydney 
  • HIFLOW Award for Best Shopping Centre Development for The Streets of Barangaroo 

Kylie Rampa, CEO, Property said “We’re really pleased with last night’s acknowledgement for projects that span our business. The depth of our work in Australia highlights the skill we have across the business. The range of projects recognised in these awards is testament to the integrated model of our business, where development and construction have collaborated to deliver these projects.” 

The Kone Award for Development Innovation went to Charter Hall for the Woolworths’ new Melbourne South Regional Distribution Centre.

“Woolworths’ $560 million state-of-the-art facility uses world-class automated technology to deliver enhanced customer, safety, supply chain, economic and sustainability benefits,” Morrison said

“Custom-built to Woolworths’ exacting specifications, and five years in the planning, this is the largest and most technologically advanced grocery distribution centre in the southern hemisphere – twice the size and capacity of equivalent facilities being built in Europe.“Charter Hall, Woolworths and Vanderlande Industries – the global market leader for logistic process automation – have invested in several world-leading technological, development and sustainability innovations, including the largest commercial solar panel installation in the country. It’s a real game changer for the logistics sector” he continued.

Vicinity Centres won the People’s Choice Award for its integrated energy strategy. This includes an investment of $73 million in renewable energy technologies – the largest ever seen in Australia’s retail sector – to create shared value for customers, retailers, investors and communities. Vicinity Centres is trialling new technology, including blockchain and a battery system which allows centres to better store their clean energy. Overall, the integrated energy strategy has created 300 highly-skilled jobs across Vicinity Centres’ portfolio during construction, as well as 40 permanent ongoing roles.
