Wing, Australia’s first on-demand drone delivery service, is teaming up with Mirvac to transform underutilised retail real estate into on-demand drone delivery fulfilment hubs.

Over the next few years, Wing and Mirvac will work together to identify Mirvac-operated retail properties in urban areas where drone delivery can create added value for customers, and run pilot drone delivery programs in these locations. The partnership will kick off with the first drone delivery pilot from the rooftop car park of Orion Springfield Central, Mirvac’s retail property located in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, and is due to launch in 2023.

This latest strategic partnership with Wing further enhances Mirvac’s focus to support its retail partners by driving their in-store and online businesses.

Mirvac Retail’s General Manager, Kelly Miller said, “As a business, we are heavily invested in collaborating with the right people and brands to support the overall growth and success of our retail partners. We’re thrilled to be trialling Wing drone deliveries at Orion Springfield Central, bringing this technology to the community, providing another connection point between customer and retailer, and ultimately delivering a more convenient shopping experience.”

Global growth and interest in drone delivery services has never been greater. In 2021, Wing partnered with Vicinity Centres to pilot the world’s first drone delivery to take off from shopping centre at Grand Plaza in Logan, Queensland. Since then, more than 100,000 deliveries have been made to customers in Australia, and demand continues to grow. In the first three quarters of 2022, Wing has already exceeded 120,000 deliveries in Australia.

Simon Rossi, General Manager, Wing, Australia, said through Wing’s partnership with Mirvac, drone delivery would, for the first time, become available to customers in the City of Ipswich, located in the booming South East Queensland region.

“We’re delighted to be teaming up with Mirvac on our shared vision for the future of urban communities, bringing drone delivery to more Australians, by leveraging underutilised retail spaces, and transforming them into delivery logistics hubs,” Rossi said.

“Over the last few years, consumer demand for drone delivery has grown rapidly, as people expect faster, convenient, and more sustainable delivery options. On-demand drone delivery can help address the costly last-mile delivery challenge by reducing road congestion and emissions, while creating new economic opportunities for retailers and communities, and providing consumers with more contactless delivery options.

“While Wing has traditionally provided delivery services directly to residential and business customers, to further accelerate our technology development, and focus on what we do best, over the next few years, we’ll be increasingly working with real estate and logistics partners to expand their delivery options, making fast drone delivery affordable and sustainable for them, and their customers.”

Springfield City Group Managing Director Raynuha Sinnathamby welcomed the strategic partnership between Mirvac and Wing and its benefits for Greater Springfield residents.

“We’re excited that drone delivery will become a reality in Greater Springfield and we’re looking forward to the first delivery next year,” Sinnathamby said.

“Springfield City Group is celebrating our 30th anniversary of innovation and growth. We’re already looking to the next 30 years when technological advancements such as drone delivery will help solve some of the challenges facing suburban cities.”
