The City of Stonnington has voted to support six development applications outlining the future vision for Chadstone – Australia’s number 1 Big Gun centre. The proposals for the continued evolution of Chadstone, revealed by Vicinity Centres in 2019 includes more than 1,400 additional parking spaces, providing additional capacity for further expansion, with a focus on improving access to, and circulation around Chadstone.

Meeting changing consumer lifestyle needs and addressing future employment trends is at the heart of the proposal which aligns to Vicinity’s mixed-use and market-leading destination strategy.

Council has indicated its support for an enhanced retail offering and a new commercial office tower, building on the success of existing office buildings, and responding to the demand from businesses to be based at Chadstone.

Vicinity’s Chief Development Officer, Carolyn Viney, said: “We are delighted with the result and look forward to continuing the detailed planning of these projects.”

The projects won’t increase the size of the precinct but rather refresh and repurpose existing space, utilising land within the current Chadstone footprint.

“We will continue to work through several preconditions for these projects, which are also subject to approval from the boards of both Vicinity Centres and the Gandel Group.” said Viney.

With Victoria’s population expected to add another one million people by 2026, places like Chadstone are well-placed to accommodate the city’s expansion without disrupting the liveability of Melbourne’s suburbs.

The Development applications lodged with the City of Stonnington include:

  • More than 1,400 additional car spaces, across two car parks
  • New nine-storey commercial office building on Middle Road
  • Expansion of the current dining terrace and leisure precinct
  • Upgraded fresh food precinct, with focus on workplace, wellness and lifestyle retailers
  • Further expansion of Australia’s biggest luxury mall

The anticipated work could begin in 2021, with completion within four years.
