Construction has started on the Stage Six expansion of Burnside Village, following the completion of site preparation works over the past few months.

The Cohen Group’s multi-million investment is currently the largest private sector retail property expansion in South Australia and a sign of the Cohen family’s confidence in the South Australian economy.

Burnside Village currently holds the number one position in Australia for MAT sales for centres below 20,000m2, as published in SCN‘s Mini Guns 2021 and 2022.

The expansion will build on the centre’s reputation as a world-class shopping destination with three levels of retail, including a new premium mall, a new dining experience, home and lifestyle, entertainment, and a health and wellbeing precinct.

It will add an additional 80 new stores and double the footprint of Burnside Village to 38,850m2. There will also be more than 560 free undercover carparks and EV charging.

Cohen Group Chief Executive Officer, Gregg Downer said the Stage Six expansion would continue the evolution of Burnside Village as a vibrant urban village by enhancing the retail experience for our shoppers and a new generation of customers.

“We’re excited to be bringing a new, unrivalled customer destination shopping experience to South Australia which aims to attract visitors from across metropolitan Adelaide, interstate and overseas,” said Downer.

“The investment being made by the Cohen Group underscores the company’s commitment to South Australia and supporting the growth and development of the state.”

Construction of Stage Six is being undertaken by national construction firm Hansen Yuncken, supported by a network of local contractors and suppliers. State Manager, Mark Rosenboom said they are pleased to partner with the Cohen Group to deliver on the vision and design of the Burnside Village expansion.

“Local consultants Bestec and Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec and AECOM are providing support to the project, while national project management group, RCP will manage the process on behalf of Burnside Village,’ said Rosenboom.

The Buchan Group has been appointed to provide world-class architectural and interior design for Stage Six. The new design complements the existing mall aesthetics, and the crowning jewel of the Centre is its 2,000m2 custom Lanik glass roof that provides an abundance of natural light and gives the centre a light and airy feel.

Colliers are managing leasing for Stage Six.

“Burnside Village is visioned to attract and capture international and national brands and deliver a dynamic and fashion-forward shopping experience,” said Ben Laycock, Colliers National Director Retail Leasing.

Burnside Village, located in Glenside, 5kms from Adelaide’s CBD, was established by the Cohen family in 1971 and has evolved and expanded to meet the needs of its customers and community by providing a curated retail offering in a relaxed, village atmosphere.

The Stage Six expansion will create more than 1,625 jobs (525 jobs through construction and a further 1,100 operational jobs).

The Stage Six expansion is expected to open in early 2025. View the fly-through here.
