This September, Perth’s leading fashion and lifestyle destination is turning 50, with Karrinyup coming alive from every corner to celebrate the golden milestone.
Officially opened in 1973 as a retail haven for Perth’s northern suburbs, the centre underwent further redevelopments in the 80s, and 90s and in 2021 it evolved with the largest redevelopment to date, an $800 million dollar reimagining of the iconic centre.
Today, Karrinyup serves as the jewel in the crown of the Western Australian retail landscape, home to more than 300 speciality and first-to-Perth retailers across 109,000m2, attracting tens of millions of shoppers through the doors every year.
With a jubilee party to mark the big 5-0, Karrinyup invited its customers to join in on the fun with a weekend of birthday celebrations across Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September. The celebration included roller-skaters, free gifts and sweet treats, giant games, music filling the mall and the ultimate giveaway, a brand-new Tesla.
Karrinyup General Manager, Ben Davis said the birthday party is a celebration for shoppers and retailers, and also the team behind the centre who have made Karrinyup the destination it is today.
“We have some special retailers who have been with us since 1973, like our chemist – who were originally the Karrinyup Chemist and are now Priceline, so we really want to honour those long-standing members of the Karrinyup community.
“50 years is a monumental milestone by anyone’s standards, and we really wouldn’t be where we are today without our loyal retailers and our shoppers – this one is for them.
“The centre has grown and changed so much in the last five decades, and some shoppers have also been with us since the very beginning, so this is our chance to say thank you and to welcome in the next 50 years in true Karrinyup style,” said Davis.
As part of the celebrations, Karrinyup partnered with a series of Perth’s very best bakers and bakeries, with each chef tasked to provide their unique spin on a Karrinyup birthday cake. Each cake was shared with a local charity to spread the joy from the party.
Filling the West Deck across the weekend, shoppers also enjoyed large-scale, birthday-inspired projections and roaming entertainment set to surprise and delight.
Karrinyup is set to celebrate its 50th birthday over the next 12 months with bespoke activations, giveaways, and pop ups across the year.
“There will be things to see, do and experience across all levels of the centre. We’re really looking forward to throwing the doors open and putting on a party to celebrate this milestone with our entire community,” said Davis.
